Born Ruffians w/ special guests Fine Mist
Saturday, September 11
|
AMS Events & Firstweek proudly present: Born Ruffians (Paper Bag recording artists from Toronto) w/ guests Fine Mist
Midland, Ontario. Back when this place was a wilderness, eight Jesuit priests were slaughtered by Iroquois; then canonized. Midland gave you saints. Then kept quiet. For 350 years. Until three Born Ruffians darker, louder, and more magical in life than any saint is in death came down from the hills to kick some ass. That was in 2002, and since then the Born Ruffians Luke LaLonde, Mitch DeRosier and Steve Hamelin have been razing bigger and bigger stages without looking back. In fact first they look down, starting every show in a huddle. There some occult energy is summoned, deemed good, and exploded into a set of writhing, jagged pop songs as beautiful and dangerous as shards of broken glass. Through it all a bewitching throb of cascading drums. Youd swear they were on the war path, till a pure rock and roll howl and sharp guitar hooks bring you back to the indie universe. Amidst the shouts and claps and the odd trombone slur, a tenderness somehow shrouds the whole thing theres something saintly about them after all. Tickets: $15 advance/ Free with Firstweek wristband On sale now at the Outpost.

JFK of MSTRKRFT Live - Tight & Bright party
Sunday, September 12
|
Blueprint Events & AMS Firstweek proudly present: JFK of MSTRKRFT Live! JFK:
Keeler started off playing in a number of different Toronto based punk and hardcore bands, his best known early project being Black Cat #13. Black Cat toured with The Locust and released several, now collectible, 7" records. Once Black Cat split, he formed his own 7-piece music project, Femme Fatale. Keeler recorded all 3 of the released EPs himself, which were produced by longtime friend Al Puodziukas, with whom he would later go on to form MSTRKRFT. In 2001, Keeler had recorded three bass and drum instrumental demos which he showed roommate Sebastien Grainger, who then expressed a desire to sing on them. After trying to find a drummer with no luck, Grainger tried singing and drumming at the same time, the result of which became Death from Above 1979. After touring extensively for 4 years, Death From Above 1979, the band took time off. In this time Keeler finished building MSTRKRFT studios in East York, Toronto, and started up MSTRKRFT along with producer Al-P. On 4 August 2006 Death From Above 1979 officially announced their breakup via their website, at which point Keeler admit the breakup had actually happened a year prior. Since then, MSTRKRFT as well as solo production and DJing as JFK have been Keeler's full-time occupation. MSTRKRFT has helped define and create a whole genre of electronic music. Working with more indie and disco influenced ideas on their first album The Looks, gradually introducing more Hip Hop and R&B influence leading to the Fist Of God LP. They have performed at almost every major music festival around the world, and have amassed a legion of hardcore fans. Tickets: On sale now at the Outpost (UBC SUB)! **This show is for UBC students only. You will be asked for your student ID at the door**

Justin Rutledge w/ Jenn Grant
Wednesday, October 20
|
AMS Events proudly presents: Justin Rutledge (Six Shooter recording artist from Toronto) w/ Jenn Grant At the mouth of the open sea, there are three ships on the horizon one of them is on fire. Black plumes of smoke rise from its charring masts like a mountain's shadow across the dawn. Perhaps those on board are tossing their lean prayers to the wind like holy matchsticks before thrusting their bodies overboard into the furiously silent ocean. Perhaps several hundred miles away a girl brushes a lock of hair from her eyes as she regards the indolent waters. Perhaps she turns, slowly making her way back to a house where the windows are always broken, away from a blackening horizon, towards the hurt of a dawn through a curtain. These are The Early Widows. Justin Rutledge returns with The Early Widows, a stoic collection of songs that rehabilitate the heart and illuminate the dark. Produced with intense fragility by Hawksley Workman, Rutledge's fourth album is an arrestingly moving and lyrically meticulous piece of art penned by one of the most progressive songwriters at work today. Shouldering an electric guitar instead of his trademark acoustic, Rutledge infuses the new material with a newfound conviction and drive. The Early Widows also includes songs co-written with literary giant Michael Ondaatje, and award-winning songwriter Darrell Scott from Nashville. Tickets: $15 advance

The Acorn w/ Leif Vollebekk
Thursday, October 21
|
AMS Events & Biltmore Cabaret proudly present: The Acorn (Paper Bag recording artists from Ottawa) w/ Leif Vollebekk

Anchored by vivid songwriting and eclectic instrumentation, The Acorn produce an original brand of experimental, popular folk music that effortlessly marries modern and traditional forms. Rolf Klausener started writing under the moniker The Acorn in the summer of 2002. Initially an excuse to teach himself homerecording, these furtive experiments quickly started eating up the majority of his free time. In the summer of 2009, the Acorn retreated from the road to an isolated cottage in Northern Quebec to begin work on their third full-length album. They had spent the better part of two years touring their critically acclaimed concept album, Glory Hope Mountain (a moving biography of Acorn front-man Rolf Klausener's mother), and were in serious need of renewal. The band had been in flux, and its confidence lay on shaky ground. The five core members needed the opportunity to regroup and create without distraction. The band chose to write collaboratively for the first time in years. Songs took shape at all hours, crafted from hazy late-night improvisations, early morning melodies pulled from the thinning threads of sleep. Modernity clashed with the bucolic via exploratory percussion, feedback, acoustic textures and the natural surrounding sounds. The band's sonic hallmarks were emphasized by the large, woody main-hall of the cottage, sounds bleeding from room to room, birdcalls and toad chirps seeping through the walls. Communal meals nourished both soul and gullet, summer constellations the only witnesses privy to late-night talks around the fire. With the world in apparent socio-economic disarray, the band took solace in their surroundings, culling songs from the web-strewn bramble as the sun set each night in the mirrored reflection of a dead still lake. Doors at 8:00pm Show at 9:30pm Tickets $13.00 in advance at Zulu, Red Cat Buy tickets online at: www.ticketweb.ca |

Libary Voices, Paper Lions & Bend Sinister
Friday, October 29
|
AMS Events and CBC R3 present: Library Voices, Paper Lions & Bend Sinister Paper Lions hail from the small town of Belfast, Prince Edward Island, but what they've managed to accomplish in the first 4 years of the bands career, is anything but small. Paper Lions have sold over 12,000 albums independently and honed their live show by touring with some of North America's finest acts such as Cake, The Rheostatics, Joel Plaskett, The Golden Dogs, and Hey Rosetta! They have been nominated for 10 East Coast Music awards, taking home "Pop Recording of the Year" (2006), been awarded the "National Touring Group of the Year" (2007, CAPACOA) and have received critical acclaim from writers all across the country. Recorded in summer/fall of 2009, the "Trophies" EP was produced by Dan Weston (Attack in Black, Classified) and captures the unbridled energy of Paper Lions live. In early 2010, Paper Lions graced the stage at the 2010 Winter Olympics and September has Paper Lions representing Canada at Expo 2010 in China. "Trophies" on MB3 Records will be available in stores and online as of the first day of the fall tour, September 28, 2010. Library Voices, an eight-piece pop collective from Regina, Saskatchewan released their EP, Hunting Ghosts & Other Collected Shorts in 2008. SPIN took immediate notice proclaiming Library Voices the "undiscovered band you NEED to hear now." They have been featured in The New Yorker. They've received generous airplay on the CBC and BBC. They have won a CBC Radio 3 "Bucky" Award. They have been nominated for a 2010 Western Canadian Music Award for "Independent Album of the Year." They've been mugged twice and lost all their gear twice (once through theft, once through an act of God). "Denim on Denim" their debut album, was released on April 13, 2010 Young Soul Records/EMI. It was (painstakingly) recorded in Regina, in the back of a local dance studio. Staying true to their objective of documenting spacious and concise pop songs, the album is still teeming with instrumentation: guitars and keys, horns and synths and (of course) the occasional feedback loop. Heartfelt critical acclaim has echoed the release of "Denim on Denim." The band has graced the covers of several market weeklies, The Georgia Straight awarded the album a perfect 5 out of 5 review and Spinner declared this June's NXNE set "one of the best of the entire festival." Tickets for this delightful double-threat fall tour will go on sale later this week on Friday August 20, 2010. CBC Radio 3 is official tour sponsor and Library Voices wish to acknowledge the generous support of Saskatchewan's Arts Board ‘Culture On The Go' program. Tickets: Ticketweb, Zulu, Red Cat

Woodhands
Tuesday, November 09
|
AMS Events proudly presents: Woodhands Woodhands is Dan Werb and Paul Banwatt, a synth and drums duo that's intent on injecting electro pop with a dose of emotional intensity and a generous portion of glam rock swagger. With a live show that's got to be seen to be believed, Woodhands creates big dance tracks that are built out of blood, sweat and tears without the assistance of any pre-recorded samples, laptops or other safety nets. Instead, they rely on some seriously monster drumming, finger-licking keytar work and some pretty punk rock vocals to get the party started. Since the release of their debut album, Heart Attack, Woodhands has received all kinds of accolades for both their recorded work and their relentless live show, appearing on ‘Best of' lists including recently being anointed one of the 10 Best New Bands On Earth by British tastemaker Q Magazine following their coverage of SXSW 2009. In short, kids are going crazy for this Woodhands dance party thing. After spending the past year and a half touring Canada, the United States, China, and Japan in support of Heart Attack, and delivering a slew of remixes and cover songs that have kept the party going strong, Woodhands is back with a new batch of energetic, and darker, dance songs. Tickets: $12 advance/$7 student. On sale Friday September 3 @ 10am via Ticketweb, Zulu, Red Cat, Outpost (SUB)

Dan Mangan w/ the Burning Hell **SOLD OUT**
Saturday, November 13
|
AMS Events, 100.5 The Peak & the Georgia Straight proudly present: Dan Mangan w/ guests The Burning Hell
Heralded as a favorite among Canada's new breed of independent musicians, Dan Mangan's travels initially took him everywhere but home. Spending most of the last six years toting guitar and merch-sack, Dan experienced Vancouver as more of a resting place than roost. He toured nearly non-stop in support of his debut album Postcards And Daydreaming, testing his words, honing his craft, and building a dedicated following. Graciously, if un-strategically, Mangan pretty much accepted every gig that came his way. He train'd and plane'd on his own throughout North America, Europe and Australia because he couldn't afford to bring a band along. When he cobbled together funds to get a second album made, he enlisted Toronto based producer John Critchley and spent weeks at Green Door Studios, bringing in musical collaborators from around the country. By the time that sophomore album, Nice, Nice, Very Nice (named in reference to a Kurt Vonnegut calypso) hit the airwaves across his homeland, Dan had already cut his teeth on the road.
Recently signed to Arts & Crafts, the trail-blazing indie label that brought us Broken Social Scene, Feist, and Stars, Dan Mangan is the first on their roster from the Pacific Northwest. Though Vancouverites once envied the thriving music scenes of Montreal and Toronto, Mangan's rain-soaked hometown has since developed a potent scene of its own - in recent years, its eclectic and supportive musical community has produced the likes of The New Pornographers, Ladyhawk, You Say Party! We Say Die!, Black Mountain, and Japandroids. Mangan is yet another native son of this emergence.
Nice, Nice, Very Nice has been shortlisted with 9 other selections for the 2010 Polaris Music Prize. Tickets: Vogue Theatre Box Office: in person, online at www.voguetheatre.com or by phone (604) 569-1144.Tickets are also available at Red Cat Records. On sale: Friday August 20, 2010
